Born March 28, 1953, Relson is the second eldest son of Helio Gracie. He began training while still a toddler and at the tender age of 6 entered his first Jiu-Jitsu competition. For 22 years, Relson reigned as the Brazilian National Champion earning him the nickname “Campeao”, translates to English as Champion.
In 1988, Relson took the opportunity to move to Hawaii and open the very first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school. Relson’s school grew quickly in popularity. In 1992 Relson held the very first Jiu-Jitsu competition outside of Brazil.
Even after years of competing, it is Relson’s main focus is to teach his Jiu-Jitsu as a form of self-defense.
“I train my Jiu-Jitsu every day to be safe on the streets, not for points” ~ Grandmaster Relson Gracie
In 1999, I began my Jiu-Jitsu journey under the instruction of Grand Master Relson Gracie and with the guidance of Team HK founder and head instructor Todd Tanaka. What turned from a hobby to a way of life, I began training more and more frequently until I realized that this is my life’s passion. I believe in the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu, not only the self-defense aspect but also how it shapes one’s mind and body. Truly it can be said that for me, Relson Gracie Team HK Jiu-Jitsu is how I live my life. Oss!
